Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the gales among the lone tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.

Stories of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game read more continued for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
